The NIKWAX company was founded in 1954 by Nick Brown. Nick grew up in Kent, southeastern England. He discovered the pleasure of hiking at the age of ten thanks to trips to the Peaks, which he took with his father as part of the YHA charity program. Year after year, he would go hiking in Scotland. Dissatisfied with the level of waterproofing of available products, he developed his own method of footwear care. Brown's goal was to protect footwear from negative external factors without excessively softening it and thus depriving the boots of their natural properties. The wax invented by Nick (from "Nick's Wax" - hence the name NIKWAX) gave rise to a wonderful success story. Nick created a series of products that meet eco-friendly trends. The environmentally unfriendly, flammable solvent was replaced by water, giving rise to a completely new line of impregnating products. NIKWAX thus became the world's first manufacturer of water-based impregnation agents for domestic use. The new products were environmentally friendly and delighted with ease of use. An additional advantage was the fact that clothing impregnated with products bearing the NIKWAX logo did not lose its waterproof properties after a visit to the washing machine. Over time, the range of applications of NIKWAX products increased significantly. The brand's agents began to be used for impregnating climbing ropes, tents, and a multitude of other products requiring frequent care.
